PAN Stands for “Permanent Account Number”.
PAN Card is a nationalised identity card. Without a PAN, you will not be able to carry out any financial transaction. A PAN card is issued under the Income Tax Act, 1961 and it contains a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code. This code is computer-generated and is unique to the holder of the card and is valid for the lifetime.
Modes of Application :
One can apply for a PAN card in two ways – online application process and, the offline mode of PAN card application. In the following sections, we will discuss the methods you can use to apply for and get a PAN card.
Online PAN card applications can be made on the Income tax portal using Aadhaar, the NSDL website or the UTIITSL website. Both have been authorized by the Government of India to issue the PAN or to make changes/corrections in the PAN on behalf of the Income Tax Department.

Steps to get Instant E-PAN
Step 1: Go to the Income tax portal Instant e-PAN
Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar number and validate it with OTP. You will see your Name, Date of birth, etc. as per Aadhaar , after which you can proceed with the submission
Step 3: You will receive confirmation submission of the application via email. Once e-PAN is alloted you will be intimated on the same. However, kindly note this point provides only a digital copy of PAN. If you want a Hard copy, you might have to pay additional fees and request for delivery using Re-Print (Link to the site) option.
Also note this point is available only for Individual. If you are trying to apply for Other than Individuals like Partnership firm , HUF, Trust then this option will not work.
Step 1: Select the PAN card application – ‘New PAN Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ available on the NSDL website.
Step 2: Fill in all the details in the form. Read the detailed instructions before filling in the details on the PAN card application form. Click here to view the PAN card application instructions.
Step 3: Pay the required fees. The PAN card application fees vary depending on the option you choose for dispatching your PAN card. Payment can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. Upon successful payment, an acknowledgment will be displayed through which you can check your application status. It will also be sent to your email ID.
Step 4: Once the application is submitted, you can verify such an application using the following means ;
Step 1: Fill in the PAN card application available on the UTIITSL website.
Step 2: Pay the application fee. On successful payment, an acknowledgment will be displayed and sent to your email ID.
Step 3: Send the documents to the UTIITSL office by courier within 15 days of online submission of Form 49A.
The UTIITSL will process the application and documents and issue the PAN card within 15 days.
Step 1: Download the ‘Form 49A’ from the NSDL e-Gov website.
Step 2: Fill in the details in the application.
Step 3: Attach your signature and photograph to the application.
Step 4: Submit the form and the required documents to the nearest PAN centre.
Step 5: Pay the fees for PAN card application.
Step 6: You will get the acknowledgement number from which you can track the status of your PAN card application status.
Once the documents are verified, a PAN card will be issued within 15 days.
The Ministry of Corporate affairs has integrated the PAN allotment at the time of company incorporation itself. Thus for Private Limited Companies, Public Limited Companies and Limited Liability Partnership firms, there is no requirement for making separate PAN applications. PAN is allotted automatically at the time of incorporation and will be reflected in such incorporation certificate.
If you want to make changes in the existing PAN such as change in name, date of birth etc, you can apply for it online. The procedure is almost the same as you apply for new PAN except in case of corrections in PAN, you also need to submit the documents to support the change required in PAN.

Step 1: Fill the online application form for making changes/corrections in PAN on the NSDL website.
Step 2: Pay the application fees. The payment of application fee can be made through credit/debit card, demand draft or net-banking. On successful payment, acknowledgement will be displayed. Save and print this acknowledgement number.
Step 3: Once the application and payment are accepted, the applicant is required to send the supporting documents through courier/post to NSDL. Only after the receipt of the documents, PAN application would be processed by NSDL. Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN. Example, request for the change in applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with a document that will contain proof of change of name from old to new.
